The League

A Structured Draft Season

We run a structured draft season. Riders apply, are evaluated on horsemanship and commitment, and are matched onto balanced teams through the draft process.

Horses aren't owned or retrained by the League, most players compete on their own horses or through hirelings arranged with our host clubs. What the draft controls is fairness: who plays with whom, and at what level.

The Draft

Balance You Can't Buy

Most amateur polo runs on a patron model: players buy into a team, or bring their own string and effectively buy their place on the pitch. We do it differently. Every player enters through the same assessment and draft process, regardless of what horses they own or what they can spend.

Teams are built by the League, not assembled by whoever has the biggest budget. That's the point of the draft, competitive balance you can't buy your way around.

That's also the point of the League itself: a mixed amateur polo circuit where developing amateurs and future patrons compete side by side, build real match experience, and go on to play at a genuinely competitive level within HPA's wider polo structure.

Assessment

What We Look For

Rider bridling a horse in the yard
  • Seat and balance under pressure
  • Willingness to learn, not just compete
  • Respect for horses and fellow players
  • Consistency across a full season, not one good match day
How It Works

Apply, Assessment, The Draft, Compete

  1. 01

    Apply

Submit your rider profile and experience level. We assess your horsemanship, not just your handicap.

  2. 02

    Assessment

Attend a structured assessment session. We evaluate seat, mallet work, horse handling and game awareness.

  3. 03

    The Draft

Accepted riders enter the draft. Team placements are made by our panel based on balance and welfare considerations, never for competitive advantage.

  4. 04

    Compete

Fixtures are managed by the League, and standings are published as the season progresses.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is This a Professional League?

No, Champion Pride is a mixed amateur polo circuit, built specifically for peer-to-peer competition. Without professionals dictating the pace, players stay fully involved in every play and get to test their own horsemanship against like-minded competitors.

Do I Need an Existing HPA Handicap or Polo Club Membership to Apply?

Not necessarily. Qualification is based on commitment and horsemanship, not your existing handicap. Details of membership, fixtures and fees will be published when the 2028 season opens.

Is There a Patron Model, or Can I Buy My Way Onto a Team?

No. There's no patron model and no private team ownership. Every player enters through the same assessment and draft process, regardless of what they can spend.

Is This a Weekly Commitment or a Structured Tournament?

A structured, competitive league rather than casual weekend chukkas. Details of membership, fixtures and fees will be published when the 2028 season opens.

Are Hirelings Included, and How Do I Organise Them?

You can bring your own horses or use hirelings. Whichever you play, the welfare charter you commit to as a rider is what the League enforces. Details of membership, fixtures and fees will be published when the 2028 season opens.

Is It Safe to Play Without Professionals Managing the Pitch?

Safety and welfare are our highest priorities. All matches are officiated by HPA-licensed umpires who hold full authority on the pitch.

Do Hireling Horses Need to Go Through Champion Pride's Retraining Process?

No. The League doesn't own or retrain horses; most players compete on their own horses or on hirelings. What every rider commits to is the welfare charter: how you're expected to treat and manage the horse you're given, regardless of its background.

How Does the Application and Assessment Process Work?

Registrations are reviewed when the 2028 season opens. Qualification is based on commitment and horsemanship, not your existing handicap.
